Summer Reading Challenges

 

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Sign up for the 2021 Summer Reading Program starting Wednesday, June 16, by tapping the "Sign Up" button under My Challenge Card. Once logged in, you can create an account for your household and add all your family members. Track your progress by completing any of the challenges for your age group listed below, attending a library program (see schedule), or reading for 30 minutes. Once all 16 challenges are marked as complete, you will be automatically entered into a raffle for a grand-prize valued at over $200! Everyone who completes a challenge card will also receive a free book, available at your local branch. The last day to submit challenge cards is Monday, Aug. 16.

PRE-READER CHALLENGES

  • Sing the ABC song.
  • Find the first letter of your name on a sign outside.
  • Sign up for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten or complete a page in your log book.
  • Draw a picture of an animal.
  • Dance to your favorite song.
  • Read a book outside with a family member.
  • Find your favorite color in a book.
  • List five words that start with the
    first letter of your name.
  • Read along with an eBook on BookFlix or OverDrive.
  • Act out the Three Little Pigs or another story.
  • Trace the letters of your name in sand or rice.
  • Go on a StoryWalk® at a Loudoun County Library.
  • Read five books by your favorite author.
  • Use a recipe to make food at home with your family.
  • Read a book about your favorite animal, then pretend to be that animal.
  • Tell a friend about your favorite character from a book.

 

ELEMENTARY CHALLENGES

  • Recommend your favorite book to a
    friend or family member.
  • Read a book with a character who looks
    different from you.
  • Read a nonfiction book about your favorite animal.
  • Listen to an audiobook.
  • Read a book outside.
  • Write your own animal story.
  • Read a book about a place you would like to visit.
  • Draw a picture of your favorite character from a book.
  • Read a book that was made into a movie,then watch the movie.
  • Follow along with a science or art activity on the Loudoun County Public Library YouTube channel.
  • Read a biography about someone you admire.
  • Read a graphic novel.
  • Watch three stories on Kanopy Kids.
  • Read a book you loved when you were younger.
  • Build a blanket fort and read a book inside it.
  • Make a recipe from a cookbook.

 

 

 

TEEN CHALLENGES

  • Read a graphic novel you haven't read before.
  • Re-read a favorite book from when
    you were younger.
  • Read something that features an animal.
  • Pick up a Take-and-Make craft kit from your library or attend an online library program.
  • Read a book with a season in the title.
  • Read a book that was made into a movie or TV show.
  • Read outside.
  • Check out a cookbook and make a recipe from it.
  • Check out a DIY book and make something that you read about.
  • Listen to an audiobook on Hoopla or OverDrive.
  • Read a book or graphic novel about an immigrant or refugee.
  • Read an #OwnVoices book.
  • Read a book that is part of a series.
  • Read a book with a number in the title.
  • Check out a magazine either in print or online.
  • Read a book recommended by a librarian.

 

ADULT CHALLENGES

  • Re-read a book from your childhood.
  • Take a class through LinkedIn Learning.
  • Read an eMagazine.
  • Read a book that was made into a movie, then watch the movie.
  • Read a book written by a local author.
  • Send a message to your favorite author.
  • Read a biography or autobiography.
  • Listen to an audiobook on Hoopla or OverDrive.
  • Check out a cookbook and make one of the recipes.
  • Read a nonfiction book about a hobby that interests you.
  • Read a book set in a place you’d like to visit.
  • Watch a movie on Kanopy.
  • Read a book outside.
  • Read a graphic novel.
  • Read a book that took place in the state or country where you were born.
  • Read a book recommended by a librarian.
